CEDAR CITY, Utah, Aug. 20 - Last week Southern Utah's
first fall football scrimmage was dominated by the defense, and although the
defense again was good, this week the offense asserted itself
Brad Sorensen completed nine-of-12 passes for 123 yards and
a touchdown to lead the attack, and although that success came largely against
the second defense, it was still satisfying.
"We're coming together, we're getting better," the junior
from Grand Terrace, Calif. said. "We've got some injured receivers who haven't
played in the scrimmages, but we've had some guys step up and play well."
One of the receivers who has emerged in the last week is
junior Cameron Morgan. A cornerback his first two seasons with the team (with a
handful of starts as a freshman), Morgan moved to the offensive side of the
ball a week ago, and has blossomed in his new role.
Morgan caught two short passes in last week's scrimmage, but
this week he was on the receiving end of the day's biggest play, a 60-yard
reception that put the ball on the 12 yard line. The next play was a 12-yard
swing pass from Sorensen to running back Austin Minefee for a score.
It looked for a moment like Morgan might get into the end
zone himself, but Dion Turner ran him down to prevent his score.
"It's easy when you have Brad for a quarterback," Morgan
said. "I just turned around and the ball was right there. All I had to do was
catch it and run."
The first offense had one more touchdown, a one-yard Deckar
Alexander run that was set up by a pass interference call in the end zone.
The defense had its share of glory on Saturday as well.
Sophomore Chad Hansen, who is in a battle for the starting middle linebacker
spot, led the way with six tackles, including a sack, while Turner, a senior
starting cornerback, and Gordon Garret, redshirt freshman safety, each had
three tackles.
Senior linebacker Brady Arnold had a solo sack, while Jeff
Tukuafu was in on two and Brad Meyer, Randall Nygren, Tyson Turley and Nick
Witzmann each had a half-sack. Witzmann also knocked down a pass at the line of
scrimmage on third down in one series and freshman Deshaun Sims broke up
another pass.
The kicking game also got a workout, as Brock Miller made
two-of-three attempts, hitting from 40 and 43 yards out, and Colton Cook hit
his only attempt, a 47-yarder.
"We're making progress," Head Coach Ed Lamb noted. "We're
cutting down on the mistakes and penalties.
"It's fun," he added.
