CEDAR CITY, Utah - Feb. 22 - Southern Utah University gymnastics will return to action this weekend, traveling to Provo to face Brigham Young and Utah State at 1:00 p.m. The Thunderbirds used a much need bye week to heal from injuries and could return several key routines to the lineups.
“This last week couldn't have come at a better time,” head coach Scott Bauman said. “It really gave us a chance to give our girls some rest, but also allowed our younger athletes to fine tune their routines.”
Senior all-arounders Brooke Cerosimo and Lauren Jeffrey are anticipated to appear on up to three events in Provo. Michaela Chernoch, out since the beginning of February could make an appearance for the T-Birds on bars.
The return of the trio to multiple lineups will help Southern Utah's push for an NCAA regional berth as well as a stronger showing at the Western Athletic Conference championships in the coming weeks. The T-Birds have six meets left going into the NCAA's and will be looking to replace its three lowest scores, needing a season average at least in the mid 193's in order to qualify. Currently, SUU has a season average of 193.117 and a regional qualifying score of 192.835.
Southern Utah will be looking to snap a three-meet losing streak and also avenge a loss to Brigham Young earlier this season. The Thunderbirds will also look to extend a 23-meet winning streak against the Utah State Aggies, dating back to the 2005 season.
The meet with BYU and Utah State is scheduled to be aired live on BYUtv and streamed on byutv.org. Fans can also follow the meet via a live stats feed that can be found online at www.suutbirds.com.
