Burden, Lee Earn Summit Tennis Honors

CEDAR CITY, Utah, May 22 ? Southern Utah's Kirrily Burden and Lenny Lee both received Summit League post-season honors this week as the conference released its all-league teams. Burden earned a spot on the all-league first team, while Lee was tabbed as the conference's coach of the year.

Burden, a freshman from Wallington, Victoria, Australia, posted a 9-8 record playing first singles and a 13-4 mark playing primarily at first doubles this season. In Summit League play Burden had a 3-2 singles and a 5-1 doubles mark teamed with fellow freshman Kateryna Drynova. She had a 10-4 overall mark at first doubles with Drynova and also teamed with Emmi Nelson-Bulloch to go 3-0 at second doubles.

“Kirrily had an outstanding first season this year, it's an honor that is well deserved,” Lee said. “It's an honor to be named to the all-Summit League team by the coaches and it's really an honor to have them name me as the coach of the year.”

Lee led the Thunderbirds to the best record in school history, a 13-7 mark which set the SUU record for wins in a season. The record-setter came in a 4-2 upset win over IPFW on the Mastodons' home court during the Summit League tournament. SUU finished second at the league tourney after a third-place showing in the regular season.

Burden is the team's first all-league selection since Nelson-Bulloch was tabbed two years ago when she was also a freshman. This is Lee's first coach of the year award at SUU.
