SANDY, Utah, June 21, 2008 ? On the longest day of the year Mandi Incorvaia claimed a first for SUU as she nailed down a 3-and-2 win over three time Utah Golf Association champ Lachell Poffenberter to become Utah's 2008 Match Play Champion. The 2008 UGA Women's Match Play Championship was contested at River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy, Utah.
The win gave SUU it's first Utah state title, at least by a player with eligibility.
“It's ironic our first state championship came from the ladies side,” SUU Coach Richard Church ? who was on hand to witness Incorvaia's round ? pointed out. “We have had a lot of successful guys but haven't had a state champ. Now, after just our first season of women's golf, we have a champion.
"Mandi played well all week,” Church went on to say. "She went head-to-head against some of the best players in the state and was able to come out on top."
Incorvaia, a sophomore-to-be from Las Vegas, Nev., beat a handful of Utah's best to claim the title. She defeated former Match Play champion Lori (Motzkus) Wilkinson and 1990 State Am champ Patty (Price) Brimley, in the early rounds before getting past two-time Match Play champion and 2000 State Am champion Tenille (Howe) Slack in the semifinals.
Poffenberger took a one-hole lead after Incorvaia bogeyed number two but that was the only hole Poffenberger would win on the day as Incorvaia came back to win the fourth and fifth holes, then held on to the lead the rest of the way.
