Southern Utah Women?s Soccer Taking First Road Trip This Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Aug. 27 - Southern Utah women's soccer will take its first road trip of the season, hoping to find better success than its home opener, when the team travels to California to face Cal-State Northridge on Friday. The trip will be the only venture to the Golden State, despite three California programs on the schedule.

“There are a lot of quality soccer programs in the state of California, stemming from the great youth soccer system,” head coach Brian Stock said. “We are always looking to play quality opponents and we want to put ourselves in front of potential prospects.

“We're expecting the game on Friday to be very similar to last week's contest,” Stock continued. “We've watched the film from last week and have found that our mistakes will be easily corrected and we'll look for a better outcome.”

SUU got out of the gates slowly with a 5-0 loss at home to UC-Riverside last weekend. The contest was closer than the scoreboard might have showed with the Thunderbirds only out shot 12-9. Senior forward Shaley Ipson-Allen led the ?Birds with four shots and junior Kristen Fronk recording a near miss off the cross bar on a free kick.

The game with Northridge will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. The meeting will also mark the second consecutive week that the T-Birds will play an opponent from the Big West Conference.

The game is schedule to kick-off at 11:30 a.m.

Scouting CS-Northridge

The Matadors will enter the game having won its home opener against San Diego State, 2-1. CSUN's Nalena Betancourt scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime after the Matadors had tied the game in the second half.

Cal-State Northridge entered the season picked seventh in the Big West Conference, after a seventh-place finish in the conference in 2007.

CSUN returns similar depth as the Thunderbirds on the back line with three players that appeared in each of the team's 18 games last season.

Head coach Keith West is entering his third year with the program.

SUU Soccer Quick Kicks

Starting Slow - With the loss to UC Riverside in the season opener, Southern Utah remains winless in the first game of the season at 0-6-2.

Closing on records - Senior Shaley Ipson-Allen needs one goal to break the all-time career mark. She is currently tied for the lead with 13. The forward is also on the brink of breaking the all-time career points mark. She is currently in second place with 31, only four points out of first.
