Southern Utah Gymnastics Signs two for 2009-10

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Nov. 18 - Southern Utah women's gymnastics head coach Scott Bauman announced the signings of Caitlin Kennedy (Temple, Texas) and Michaela Chernoch (Naples, Fla.) to national letters of intent today.  The pair will join the team, beginning with the 2010 gymnastics season.

Kennedy is a two-time level 10 Texas State Champion and two-time Junior Olympic national qualifier who placed 14th in the all-around in 2007.  In 2008, Kennedy finished ninth on the vault and 21st in the all-around.  She is the first gymnast to be recruited at Southern Utah with her own skilled named after her: the 'Kennedy', a toe-on front layout dismount on bars.

"Caitlin is a very powerful athlete," head coach Scott Bauman said.  "Her floor and vault are very strong and she does things on the floor that we have never had here at SUU.  She is a very clean bar worker and is a very good student."

Chernoch is a two-time level 10 national qualifier and five-time regional qualifier.  She was the first alternate to the national competition in 2008 and placed 15th in the all-around at regionals, where she finished fifth on floor and ninth on bars.

"Michaela is one of those athletes that has been very well coached and comes out a great gym," Bauman said.  "I think being on the collegiate level will push her and stretch her abilities.  She is loaded with talent and does some unique and interesting skills on bars and floor."

Southern Utah gymnastics will open its 2009 season when the Thunderbirds travel to Fullerton, Calif. and face Cal-State Fullerton on Friday, Jan. 16.
