CEDAR
CITY, Utah, March 9 - Southern Utah's two men's basketball early signees
from the high school ranks closed their prep careers on strong notes last week.
Forward Kyle Davis led Alta High School to the Utah 5A state
title and earned tournament MVP honors along the way after leading the Hawks
with 14 points and 12 rebounds in a 46-32 win over Davis in the championship
game. Alta also claimed the Region 4 title.
Center Cal Hanks didn't get to celebrate a team championship
but he did help his Mountain Crest squad to a Region 5 crown and an appearance
in the 4A title game, where he scored a team-high 12 points in the Mustangs'
55-43 loss to Timpview.
"We're excited about the way our two early signees played in
their state tournaments," SUU Coach Roger Reid said. "Kyle Davis helped lead
Alta to a state championship and Cal Hanks helped lead Mountain Crest to the
championship game.
"Kyle was named the 5A tournament MVP, which gives us
back-to-back 5A tournament MVPs after Jordan Weirick won the award then signed
with us last year," he added. "We think this is just another indication we're
on the right track with our recruiting efforts."
