Thunderbirds to Compete in Arizona and Washington

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Jan. 25 - Southern Utah Track & Field will compete in two venues this weekend as several athletes travel to Seattle, Wash. for the Husky Classic, while the majority of the team returns to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the Mountain T Invitational.

“We're sending the athletes to the two different meets, depending on where we think they will be well matched and find continued improvement,” head coach Eric Houle said. “The athletes in Seattle will also be working toward qualifying for the national championship.”

Cameron Levins, Nate Jewkes, Austin West and Dallas Eborn will represent the men's distance runners at Washington. Levins currently ranks first in the Summit League in the 800-meters, after opening the season at NAU with a time of 1:50.94.

West ranks first (8:24.81) in the 3,000-meters and fourth (4:09.79) in the mile, while Jewkes ranks second (8:23.46) in the 3,000-meters.

Thrower Chris Johnson and jumper Wade Nielson will also compete at the Husky Classic. Johnson ranks second in the conference in the shot put with a mark of 53-1.75 at NAU. Nielson ranks fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6-8.

Distance runners Diana Medina-Mitchell, Jamie Smith, Madalyn Jones and Whitney Curtis will represent the women in Seattle, along with throwers Kayla Kovar and Sadi Hoyt. Medina's 800-meter time of 2:14.82 ranks fourth in the conference, while Jones ranks sixth (10:11.14) in the 3,000-meters.

Kovar earned an Athlete of the Week recognition for her performances at NAU, and ranks first (51-1) in the shot put and fourth (55-9.75) in the weight throw.

After this week's meets, the Thunderbirds will next compete Feb. 3-4, when the team splits up between three venues: the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, Idaho; the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.; and the NAU Open in Flagstaff, Ariz.
