Thunderbirds Head to UCR Tournament

SUU SET TO FACE UTEP AND NEW MEXICO STATE
Southern Utah will take part in the UCR Tournament this week, hosted by UC Riverside in California. The Thunderbirds will open tournament play against UTEP on Friday at 5 p.m. then wrap up the weekend against New Mexico State on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. (MT) Live stats for the match will be available at suutbirds.com.

SOUTHERN UTAH FALLS TO THE UTES IN SALT LAKE

Southern Utah started strong in its Thursday night matchup with the University of Utah playing to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes. The Ute offense then erupted in the second half for four goals in 16 minutes on its way to a 4-0 win. Senior goalkeeper Charly Booth made 12 saves in the match, but the Utes were able to fire off 31 shots, including 16 on goal, to come away with the win. The Thunderbirds were held to six shots in the match and were unable to get on the scoreboard.

T-BIRDS ENTER FIRST SEASON IN THE BIG SKY
There promises to be a lot of change for the Southern Utah University Soccer program this fall as the Thunderbirds prepare to enter their premier season in the Big Sky Conference under new head coach Becky Hogan. “The Big Sky is full of parity, on any day any team could win so you don't ever get a day off,” explains head coach Becky Hogan. “It's a league with a higher level of technical of players, a lot of good coaches and very good soccer.”

ABOUT THE UTEP MINERS
The Miners are off to a 3-1 start on the season while picking up wins over Utah Valley, Texas State and Army. UTEP finished with a record of 11-8-4 in 2011 which included a 4-5-2 mark in Conference USA. Senior midfielder Tess Hall leads UTEP with four goals and a pair of assists this season while Brittany Kindzierski is back for the Miners after leading the team with nine goals and fours assists for 22 total points in 2011. Head Coach Kevin Cross enters his 11th season with the team where he has compiled a career record of 142-74-12. Friday's match-up will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools.

ABOUT THE NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES
New Mexico State brings a record of 0-2 into the tournament after dropping a pair of matches to Boise State and Idaho State last week. The Aggies finished with a record of 10-8-3 in 2011 which included a 2-3-2 mark and sixth place finish in the Western Athletic Conference. Yolanda McMillion is back for her senior season after leading her team with five goals and five assists last fall. Head Coach Blair Quinn led NMSU to it's first WAC Tournament appearance in his first year at the school. This will be the first time SUU has faced the Aggies.

LOOKING AHEAD
Southern Utah will open a three-game homestand next week starting with a Saturday matchup against in-state rival Utah Valley. The Thunderbirds and Wolverines will meet at 1 p.m. at the Thunderbird Soccer Field.

NEW THUNDERBIRD SOCCER ASSISTANT
First-year Southern Utah soccer head coach Becky Hogan will be joined by new assistant Adam Farsi on the sidelines this fall. Farsi most recently worked with the Idaho State University Women's Soccer program while also serving as a captain and assistant coach for the ISU Men's Club team. He has also spent time at the both the club and high school levels and will bring 10 years of coaching experience to his post with the SUU Soccer team. “I'm thrilled that Adam is joining the coaching staff. He brings an unparalleled passion for the game and attention to detail that will help elevate this program to the next level,” said Hogan.
