CEDAR CITY, Utah, Nov. 1 - Southern Utah University
linebacker Zak Browning has been named the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision
Defensive Freshman of the Week by College Sports Journal for his play in the
Thunderbirds' 30-27 upset of then-No. 1 Eastern Washington last Saturday.
Browning, a 5-foot-11, 215-pound linebacker from Camas,
Wash. (Union HS), led all defenders with 15 tackles, including 14 solo stops.
He also notched one tackle for loss and recovered a fumble in the win.
The tackle for loss came on second-and-10 on Eastern
Washington's final drive and was instrumental in preventing a touchdown and helping
to force a missed field goal. He recovered the fumble - which he also had a
hand in forcing - came at the SUU 12 yard line in the fourth quarter to
thwart another Eagle scoring opportunity.
Browning is SUU's second freshman to be honored for his play
against Eastern Washington. Safety Miles Killebrew was named National Punt
Returner of the Week by College Football Performance Awards earlier in the
week.
