Heuir Named Big Sky Co-Player of the Week

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Jan. 7 - Southern Utah University's Damon Heuir has been named Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week by the Big Sky Conference, it was announced today. Heuir shares the honor with Weber State's Scott Bamforth.

Heuir (pronounced "Higher"), a 6-foot-2 senior guard from Townsville, Queensland, Australia, scored a Big Sky season-high 30 points to lead SUU to its first road win of the season, a 90-77 victory at Northern Arizona last Saturday afternoon. Heuir started a 22-2 first-half run with a 3-pointer and he buried two more threes during the stretch that lifted SUU from a 9-7 deficit to a 29-11 lead. He went on to score 20 of his points in the second half, including a 3-pointer for the first basket of the period to lift SUU to a 45-30 lead and 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:04 to keep the Lumberjacks at bay. He hit 6-of-11 shots, 4-of-6 3-pointers and 14-of-16 free throws in the game. The 14 made free throws are also the most in the Big Sky this season. In addition to his scoring, he pulled down four rebounds, dished out two assists, picked off two steals and blocked a shot.

Bamforth, a 6-2 senior guard from Albuquerque, N.M., averaged 20.5 points, three assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 rebounds per game as the Wildcats earned conference wins over Northern Colorado and North Dakota. Bamforth was 10-of-15 from 3-point range and 15-of-25 from the floor in the two games.

Heuir is Southern Utah's first Big Sky player of the week for men's basketball.
