CEDAR CITY, Utah, Jan. 7 - Southern Utah University's
Damon Heuir has been named Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week by the Big
Sky Conference, it was announced today. Heuir shares the honor with Weber State's
Scott Bamforth.
Heuir (pronounced "Higher"), a 6-foot-2 senior guard from
Townsville, Queensland, Australia, scored a Big Sky season-high 30 points to lead
SUU to its first road win of the season, a 90-77 victory at Northern Arizona
last Saturday afternoon. Heuir started a 22-2 first-half run with a 3-pointer
and he buried two more threes during the stretch that lifted SUU from a 9-7
deficit to a 29-11 lead. He went on to score 20 of his points in the second
half, including a 3-pointer for the first basket of the period to lift SUU to a
45-30 lead and 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:04 to keep the Lumberjacks at
bay. He hit 6-of-11 shots, 4-of-6 3-pointers and 14-of-16 free throws in the
game. The 14 made free throws are also the most in the Big Sky this season. In
addition to his scoring, he pulled down four rebounds, dished out two assists,
picked off two steals and blocked a shot.
Bamforth, a 6-2 senior guard from Albuquerque, N.M.,
averaged 20.5 points, three assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 rebounds per game as
the Wildcats earned conference wins over Northern Colorado and North Dakota.
Bamforth was 10-of-15 from 3-point range and 15-of-25 from the floor in the two
games.
Heuir is Southern Utah's first Big Sky player of the week
for men's basketball.
