CEDAR CITY, Utah, Feb. 4 - The TBA was removed from
Southern Utah University's 2012-13 men's basketball schedule today as it was
announced the Thunderbirds will host Cal State
Northridge in the BracketBuster tournament on Feb. 23, at 7:35 p.m. in the
Centrum.
The two teams have a bit of a history as the Thunderbirds
and Matadors competed against each other in basketball in the American West
Conference - along with current Big Sky member Sacramento State - during the
1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.
Northridge currently has an overall record of 12-11,
including a 3-8 mark in Big West Conference play. The Matadors are in ninth
place in the BWC heading into this week's play.
Southern Utah has an overall record of 9-12 but the
Thunderbirds are tied for third place in the Big Sky with a conference mark of
7-5 heading into the week.
Following CSUN's departure from the American West the
Matadors were members of the Big Sky for five seasons, from 1995 to 2001 when
they departed the BSC for the Big West.
SUU holds a 13-5 edge in the series with CSUN, including an
8-0 mark at home, but the teams haven't met since 1995, when the Thunderbirds
beat the Matadors, 57-54, in the semi-finals of the AWC tournament.
