PALM DESERT, Calif., Feb. 22 Southern Utah's men's golf team
was in a tie with George Mason for 16th place at 21-over par 309, one shot back
of host Wyoming after the first round of the Desert Intercollegiate golf tournament
on Friday. The tournament is being held at the par 72, 7,061-yard Classic Club.
Sophomore Sammy Cole was the low Thunderbird, tied for 37th
after an opening-round 2-over par 74 while junior Taylor Schone was one shot
back of Cole at 75 and in a tie for 49th. Junior Tim Leonard was third among
Thundebrirds, in 79th place at 7-over par 79, while junior Jake Holt
and freshman John Reid were tied in 90th at 81, along with SUU's
Brady Welburn, who is competing as an individual this week.
Sixteenth-ranked TCU was the first-round leader after
shooting 11-under par 277, which gave the Horned Frogs a seven shot lead over
St. Mary's, San Francisco and Texas Tech, which all finished at 4-under par
284. Oregon State was fifth at 291, followed by Idaho (295), Nebraska and Cal
Poly (296), and Kansas and Wichita State (299). Iowa State was 11th
at 300, with Santa Clara (301) 12th, followed by Arkansas-Little
Rock (302), Louisiana-Monroe (304), Wyoming (308) and SUU and George Mason.
The tournament continues with 18
holes on Saturday and concludes Sunday.
