PALM DESERT, Calif., Feb. 23 - Southern Utah's men's
golf team shaved 12 strokes off its Friday score and moved up four spots, from
16th to 12th at the Desert Intercollegiate golf
tournament, after shooting 297 at the par 72, 7,061-yard Classic Club on
Saturday.
Tim Leonard led the charge for the Thunderbirds at even-par
72 for a two-round total 151, while Jake Holt shot 73 to sit at 154. Sammy Cole
had the best two-round total, however, at 149 after rounds of 74 and 75 left
him at 5-over par and in 35th place. Leonard was second among Thunderbirds in 45th,
while Taylor Schone was at 152 and in 54th, Holt was 63rd and John Reid was 93rd
at 160. SUU's Brady Welburn, playing as an individual, was 100th at
167.
SUU finished the day at 606, one shot up on tournament host Wyoming
and three back of Kansas.
TCU was the only team below par after two rounds as the
Horned Frogs shot even-par 288 on Saturday after an 11-under par round on
Friday to leave them at 565. Texas Tech was second at even par 576 after
shooting 292 on Saturday, with St. Mary's third at 2-over after a second round
294 left the Gaels at 578.
TCU's Julien Brun, Texas Tech's Finley Ewing and St. Mary's
Jonathan De Los Reyes shared the second-round lead at 5-under par 139.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Sunday, beginning
at 7:30 a.m.
