CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbird gymnastics team hosted their annual Red/White Meet on Friday night inside the Centrum Arena, giving the 2017 squad a chance to show the Cedar City community what they’re going to bring to the floor of competition this season.

The events were judged by the coaches as the team split up into two groups, as the team competed in front of 2,654 fans.

SUU head coach Scott Bauman said he was impressed by what his gymnasts brought to the table, especially since for his seven freshmen it was their first time in front of a large Centrum crowd.

“It felt like a meet down here on the floor of competition, and that’s all we were trying to do,” he said.

SUU senior Danielle Ramirez said she was excited about the crowd in attendance on Friday night, and thinks it was a good way to get the freshmen acclimated to the Centrum Arena.

“I think they did really well,” she said. “I don’t think they expected this many people, so getting more people than we expected was a good way to put more pressure on them and they handled it really well.”

The team posted several solid scores on the evening. On vault Stacie Webb led the way with a 9.900, followed by Danielle Ramirez with a 9.850.

On bars Madison McBride, Tyly Bozzuto and Ramirez all posted 9.850s to lead the team.

Bozzuto had the top mark on beam with a 9.900.

Webb also took home the top floor score with a 9.875. Bozzuto and Autumn Jorgensen both were given a 9.850.

The coaches awarded the team a 49.150 on vault, a 48.950 on bars, a 48.750 on beam and a 49.150 on floor. In total, SUU scored a 196.000 on Friday. The top five scores from each event were added up to calculate the final scores.

The Thunderbirds will host Stanford for their regular season opener next Friday, with the meet set to begin at 7 pm.

Bozzuto said the team cannot wait to host the Stanford Cardinal next week.

“I’m so excited for the crowd and the energy that will be here when Stanford is here,” she said.
