CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women’s basketball team hosted the Weber State Wildcats Thursday night for a weekday rivalry showdown in the Centrum Arena. The Thunderbirds fought hard all night, but were not able to come away with a win as the Wildcats earned their third Big Sky win of the season, 73-68.
“I love this team and the fight that they have and the competitiveness that they have. They don’t know when to quit. They just continue to fight back and that is why we have put ourselves in plenty of positions to win and now it is just a matter of one or two plays to get us there,” head coach Chris Boettcher said after the game.
The game opened with the Thunderbirds going on a 10-4 run to take an early lead over the Wildcats. Weber State quickly turned things around on the T-Birds finishing the first quarter leading by five and the first half leading by seven.
After finding themselves outscored in the first three quarters and trailing by 13, the Thunderbirds rallied in the fourth quarter. They outscored the Wildcats 23-18 and came to within three points of the lead with just 18 seconds left. A final WSU layup with just two seconds left would be the final blow as the Wildcats secured the 73-68 victory.
Sophomore Darri Frandsen was 10-12 from the field and led the T-Birds with 23 points. It was her third 20+ point performance of the season. Junior Whitney Johnson and senior Jessica Richardson fell just shy of double-doubles as Johnson had 11 points and nine rebounds and Richardson finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady T-Birds will be back in action Saturday night against Idaho State. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m. in Cedar City.
