LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Southern Utah University women’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss against the Youngstown State Penguins Friday afternoon. The Thunderbirds are on the road in Las Vegas this weekend.

In the doubles category sophomore Charity Sagiao and freshman Cloe Stocking came out on top over Penguins’ Noelly Longi Nsimba and Cassandra Moraleja 6-5(5). The Thunderbirds were unable to take the other two doubles matches.

The Thunderbirds’ point came from senior Evgenia Marushko, who won her singles match in the No. 1 position against Penguins’ Dominika Lakova 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.

“We had opportunities but couldn’t capitalize on them in doubles and singles,” said Thunderbird head coach Rose Ketmayura. “We faded mentally after doubles was over and had too many downs and not enough ups. I’m super proud of the way Genia turned the match around. Laura stepped up really well too but in the end fell in three sets. Hopefully we have learned from today to make adjustments for tomorrow’s matches.”

The Thunderbirds play a doubleheader Saturday against Idaho and UNLV at 11 a.m and 3 p.m.
