LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Southern Utah softball team kickoff their 2017 season Friday in Las Vegas as they played their first two games in the UNLV Sportco Kickoff Classic.

Game One: Louisville Cardinals

The Cardinals dominated game one putting up two or more runs in each inning on their way to a 17-3 victory. It was tough sledding for the Thunderbirds in the early innings as they were only able to put together two hits in four innings. Down 17 runs in the top of the fifth, the T-Birds strung together a couple of hits and scored three runs, but it would not be enough to keep the game from being called at the end of that half inning.

Junior Hanna Wynn started the game for the Thunderbirds, and ended up taking the loss as she gave up six earned runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings. Maryssa Becker earned the win for the Cardinals giving up only two hits in four innings of work. Becker was a member of ESPN’s Top 25 Best Softball Players during the preseason.

Game Two: CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners

The Roadrunners struck first in the nightcap when Nadia Amezcua blasted a solo homerun in the top of the second inning off senior Kirsten Hostetler. The Thunderbirds responded immediately in the bottom of that inning when senior Morgan Leonard hit an RBI triple to tie the game at 1-1. She would then be brought the rest of the way home on an RBI single by fellow senior Megan Reed.

The Thunderbirds added runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings on their way to a 7-3 victory, their first of the 2017 season. Besides the solo shot in the second, Hostetler had a solid night on the mound giving up just three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings and picking up her first win of the season.

Sophomore Javlyn Weaver was 2 for 2 in the game against the Roadrunners including a triple and two RBIs. Morgan Leonard finished her night 3 for 6 with a single, double, triple, and three RBIs between the two games.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against the UNLV Rebels followed by another game under the lights against Virginia Tech. The game against UNLV will be streamed at
