Thunderbirds Drop Close Contest Against Bobcats
By SUU Strategic Communication
BOZEMAN, Mont. - The Thunderbird women’s basketball team played a nail-biter against the Montana State Bobcats on Saturday afternoon, which went MSU’s way in the final minutes 71-68.
“They showed a lot of heart to bounce back from a slow start at Montana,” SUU head coach Chris Boettcher said about the performance. “They fought like crazy and I was really proud of the effort, energy and execution.”
Jessica Richardson led the way for the Thunderbirds with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Darri Frandsen also hit double-double status for SUU with 11 points and 10 rebounds. SUU’s point guard Rebecca Cardenas also pulled down 10 boards for the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds outrebounded the Bobcats 56-38.
“Against Montana our offense was a little stagnant, and one of the things we’ve really done well this season is rebound the ball on the offensive end, so we made a big emphasis to focus on that,” Boettcher said.
MSU’s Peyton Ferris led all scorers with 19 points. She also pulled down nine boards.
The first quarter in Bozeman was a high-scoring scoring affair, as the T-Birds held a 27-23 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
SUU held on to the lead for the majority of the second quarter, heading to halftime with a 42-39 lead.
Midway through the third quarter the Bobcats seemed to swing the momentum in their favor, as they led for the final four and a half minutes of the third frame.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, and the game went right down to the final shot when senior Jamie Smith pulled the trigger on triple that would have tied the game, but missed.
The Thunderbirds will have next Thursday off before traveling to Flagstaff, Arizona, to face off against the Lumberjacks of NAU on Saturday.
