LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Southern Utah softball team continued play in the UNLV Sportco Kickoff Classic Saturday afternoon with a game against the Rebels of UNLV. Despite giving themselves a couple of opportunities, the Thunderbirds failed to plate a run as they fell to the Rebels 4-0.

The Rebels struck first putting up three runs in the home side of the first inning. The bulk of the damage was done by senior Brianna Gatlin when she knocked in freshman Mara Kemmer and junior Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez on a two-RBI triple to right field. Gatlin would come around to score on the next play to make it 3-0 Rebels early.

The Thunderbirds were only able to put one runner on base through the first three innings, a one-out walk by senior Morgan Leonard in the second. They wouldn’t collect their first hit until the fifth inning when sophomore Riley Nance legged out an infield single. The only other Thunderbird hit came on a one-out double by sophomore Kendall Kapitzke in the sixth inning.

Freshman Samantha Guile started in the circle for the Thunderbirds. She gave up seven hits and three earned runs in her 2017 starting pitching debut. She was relieved by junior Haley Wall in fourth inning. Wall came in and shut down the Rebel offense, allowing no hits and just one baserunner in her 2.2 innings of work.

The game against the Rebels was not the only scheduled contest of the day for the Thunderbirds. They were supposed to play Virginia Tech in the nightcap, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather and poor field conditions. There is no word yet on whether or not the two teams will make up the game on Sunday.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action Sunday morning in their regularly-scheduled contest against the Hokies at 12:15 p.m.
