LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Southern Utah softball team wrapped up play in the 2017 UNLV Sports Kickoff Classic Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 loss to the Hokies of Virginia Tech.

The Thunderbirds ran into trouble early as the Hokies scored four runs off of starting pitcher senior Kirsten Hostetler on just two hits and three errors in the first inning. After picking up her first win of the season Friday night, Hostetler would only make it to the third inning in this one before being knocked out of the game by the Hokies. Sophomore Cheyenne Cudahy would take over with the bases loaded in the third inning.

On the offensive side, the T-Birds wouldn’t be able to pick up their first hits of the game until the third inning when junior Sarah Murphy and sophomore Nicole Simonson hit back-to-back singles. However, two quick outs would keep them from coming around to score.

The lone Thunderbird run came in the fourth inning when senior Karlee Manzione made a pinch hitting appearance with the bases loaded and only one out. A ground ball to second base was all it took to bring fellow senior Megan Reed home and prevent the Thunderbirds from being shutout in a second straight game.

Cudahy would pitch the rest of the game for the Thunderbirds and she was lights out in her second relief appearance of the weekend. She gave up an RBI single to the first batter she faced in the third inning, but retired 11 straight Hokies after that. Between her two appearances, Cudahy only gave up three hits and struck out two batters in six total innings pitched.

A single by senior Megan Reed in the sixth inning and another single by Murphy in the seventh were the only hits the Thunderbirds would be able to pick up the rest of the game as they eventually fell to the Hokies 7-1. Chelsea Whitcomb picked up the win for the Hokies giving up just four hits and one run in four innings of work. She struck out six Thunderbirds on the way to her first victory of the season.

The Thunderbirds will be back in Las Vegas next weekend for the UNLV DeMarini Desert Classic. They will play five different Mountain West Conference teams including the likes of Utah State and Boise State.
