FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Southern Utah women’s basketball team played their only game of the week Saturday afternoon against the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. The Thunderbirds held a 34-26 lead at halftime, but weren’t able to hold on as the ‘Jacks came back to win it by a score of 77-65.
The Thunderbirds came out strong in the first half, outshooting the Lumberjacks 38.9 percent to 34.5 percent. After holding an eight point lead at the half, the Thunderbirds were able to push their lead to as much as 12 early in the third quarter.
With 8:26 left in the third, the Lumberjacks launched an 18-4 run that lasted the rest of the quarter and gave them a two point lead heading into the fourth. Their hot shooting carried over into the final quarter as they shot 11-17 from the field and put up 27 points to finish off the Thunderbirds.
Despite the loss, Darri Frandsen posted her eighth double-double of the season leading all-scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three blocks in the loss. Frandsen is now third in the Big Sky in rebounding, averaging 7.9 per game.
Saturday’s loss pushes the T-Birds’ losing streak to 14 games and an overall record of 5-20. They remain the only team in the Big Sky without a win in conference play.
The Thunderbirds will be back home next week for rematches with Portland State and Sacramento State. Those games will be the final home games of the 2016-17 season and the final home games for seniors Jessica Richardson and Jamie Smith.
