LAS VEGAS, Nev. - After being rained out on day two, the Southern Utah softball team wrapped up play in the UNLV DeMarini Desert Classic on day three with a regularly scheduled game against the Boise State Broncos and a makeup game against the Nevada Wolf Pack.

Game One: BSU 9, SUU 1

The longball was the theme in game one as the Broncos used three of them to score eight of their nine runs. The first came in the first inning when Makenzie Sullivan hit a two-out, two-run shot off of starting pitcher Samantha Guile. Two innings later, Sullivan would hit her second bomb of the day, a three-run shot to give the Broncos a 6-1 lead and knock Guile out of the game.

The lone Thunderbird run came in the top of the third inning when Samantha Guerra reached on an error, moved to third base on a Sarah Murphy single, and scored on a wild pitch by Bronco starting pitcher Christina Washington. Murphy finished the game two for three with two singles and a stolen base.

The Broncos put the Thunderbirds to rest in the bottom of the fifth inning when Corey Hendrickson hit the third Bronco home run of the game. Her two-run blast off of relief pitcher Hanna Wynn gave Boise State the 9-1 victory in five innings.

Game Two: UNR 6, SUU 1

Haley Wall got her first start of the season in the circle Sunday afternoon in a makeup game against the Nevada Wolf Pack. Wall held the Pack to just two hits, but only made it through 1.1 innings of work as free bases and untimely errors allowed UNR to score five early runs on their way to a 6-1 win over the Thunderbirds. Kirsten Hostetler pitched 4.2 innings in relief of Wall, giving up just one run on four hits.

The lone Thunderbird run in this one came in the fourth inning when Nicole Simonson got things started with a leadoff single and came around to score on a RBI fielder’s choice by Javlyn Weaver. Sarah Murphy added two more hits in game two, finishing the day four for seven.

The next games for the Thunderbirds will come in the St. George Red Desert Classic hosted by Southern Utah University. The 11-team tournament will take place March 3rd-5th in St. George, Utah.
