Thunderbirds Finish Play in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Southern Utah University women’s tennis team finished play today after two matches in Arizona against Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona this weekend.
Match One: Grand Canyon 7, Southern Utah 0
Friday morning the Thunderbirds played their first of two matches for the weekend against the Grand Canyon Antelopes. The Antelopes swept the doubles competition to earn the first point of the match.
Leading 1-0, the Antelopes held control of the singles competition, winning every point. The closest match for the Thunderbirds was in the No. 2 position from junior Mikala Lowrance against Antelopes’ Alex Petralkova (7-6(3), 2-6, 10-12). After finishing the match, Lowrance moved to a record of 3-3 in the No. 2 position.
Match Two: Northern Arizona 7, Southern Utah 0
The T-Birds played their third Big Sky Conference match of the season Saturday morning against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
In the doubles competition, the Lumberjacks took the point with all three wins. The Thunderbirds’ team of sophomore Charity Sagiao and freshman Cloe Stocking put up a close fight against Antelopes’ Hailey Rochin and Marta Lewandowska (7-5).
The Lumberjacks swept the singles competition, ending the match 7-0. In the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, Charity Sagiao and junior Teresa De Enrique Schmidt each had a good showing with scores of 4-6, 3-6 and 1-6, 5-7 respectively.
Next up for the Thunderbirds will be a doubleheader on Saturday, March 4, in Grand Forks against North Dakota and the University of Nebraska Omaha.
