Thunderbirds Topped in North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Southern Utah University women’s tennis team were defeated on the road on Saturday in a doubleheader against the University of North Dakota and the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Match One: North Dakota 4, Southern Utah 3

The first match of the day for the Thunderbirds was against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in a Big Sky Conference matchup.

The Fighting Hawks took an early lead, sweeping the doubles competition and winning the first match in the singles competition over freshman Cloe Stocking in the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-1.

Thunderbirds’ sophomore Charity Sagiao responded by winning SUU’s first point of the match against Fighting Hawks’ Sophie Allen-Fisher in the No. 4 position 6-3, 6-1.

In the No. 2 position, junior Mikala Lowrance earned a hard-fought point for the Thunderbirds over Fighting Hawks’ Preethi Kasilingam 4-6, 7-5, 12-10. The Thunderbirds’ third and final point came from Laura Martin Lozano in the No. 6 position, who defeated UND’s Alysse Nakasato 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The Thunderbirds were unable to score another point to take the match.

Match Two: Omaha 5, Southern Utah 2

Following the match with North Dakota, the T-Birds played a non-conference match against Omaha.

In the doubles competition, Thunderbirds’ Sagiao and Stocking took their match 7-6, (4-0) over Omaha’s Kylie Boyer and Kenzie Hill in the No. 3 position. Omaha took the other two matches to secure the doubles point.

For the singles competition, Stocking won her match in the No. 3 position over Omaha’s Emily Behling 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Southern Utah’s final point against Omaha came from Sagiao, who took her second singles match of the day over Rylee Tucker 6-4, 6-2, improving her individual record to 4-6.

Southern Utah will play again this upcoming weekend in conference matchups against Montana State and the University of Montana. The matches will take place in Montana on Friday at 10 a.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
