CEDAR CITY, Utah - It has been a real Jekyll and Hyde weekend for the Southern Utah softball team so far in the Beehive Classic. After collecting just three hits Thursday against Utah State and 17 hits against Wagner College on Friday, the Thunderbirds were held to just two hits in a 4-1 loss to Bradley University Saturday afternoon.

The Braves opened the scoring in the first inning with three straight hits, a sacrifice fly, and a passed ball against starting pitcher Samantha Guile, putting the Thunderbirds in a 3-0 hole before they even set foot in the batter’s box. Despite the rough start, the freshman really settled in over her next 5.2 innings of work, allowing just four hits and striking out three Braves.

After a Sarah Murphy leadoff single to center field in the top of the first inning, the T-Bird offense was held hitless until the sixth when Kendall Kapitzke hit a rocket to third base for the second SUU hit of the game. Murphy, who had reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning, would come in to score on the following play when a pitch from Jaelen Hull found it’s way to the backstop.

The Braves picked up one more run in the top of the seventh inning taking advantage of an error by Guile and a passed ball from Morgan Leonard. The Thunderbirds went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, losing the game by a score of 4-1.

The Thunderbirds will wrap up play in the Beehive Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader against Bradley and Wagner College. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. at Kathryn Berg Field.
