ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah men’s tennis team hosted the Idaho State Bengals Wednesday for their eighth Big Sky match of the season. The Thunderbirds were only able to pick up one point in the match, ultimately losing by a score of 6-1.
In the doubles competition the SUU team of Sergio Palacio and Nicolas de Enrique Schmidt won the first match for the Thunderbirds, defeating ISU’s Quentin Wacquez and Francis Filipovich 6-3. However, the Bengals took the next two matches to win the doubles point and go up 1-0.
The momentum carried into the singles competition for the Bengals as they won five of the six matches. The single point for the Thunderbirds came from freshman Cedric Rupa in the No. 6 position. He defeated ISU’s Haseeb Khan 7-5, 7-5 to secure the point.
With the win the Bengals moved to 3-2 in the Big Sky while the Thunderbirds dropped to 1-7. The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Weber State Wildcats. The match is set to start at 10:00 a.m. at the Thunderbird Tennis Courts.
