CEDAR CITY, Utah - After taking the series with two wins on Friday, the Southern Utah softball team hosted the Idaho State Bengals for the final game of the three-game series Saturday afternoon. Despite a solid pitching performance from junior Hanna Wynn, the Thunderbirds had a tough time getting their bats going and could not complete the sweep as they dropped game three by a score of 4-1.

The Bengals took the lead in the first inning as they used back-to-back, one-out hits to make it 1-0 early. After giving up that first inning run, Wynn shut the Bengal offense down over her next three innings of work, but the score would remain 1-0 as the Thunderbird offense was being kept quiet by ISU’s Ashlyn Ames. The T-Birds didn’t pick up their first hit until the fourth inning when Nicole Simonson legged out an infield single to shortstop.

The Bengals put up two more runs in the fifth inning, but the Thunderbirds would get one back on a two-out RBI single from Simonson that scored Payton Hart and made it 3-1 Bengals. Unfortunately, that would be all of the scoring for the Thunderbirds in this one. A seventh-inning, pinch-hit single from Kaitlin Williams would be the only other Southern Utah hit, as they finished with just five hits and one run on the day.

Wynn was tagged with the loss after working 6.2 innings and giving up twelve hits and four runs. Simonson was the only Thunderbird with multiple hits in the game, finishing two for three with a RBI.

Despite the loss, the Thunderbirds still took two out of three games from the Bengals and now hold a 7-5 record in Big Sky play. Their next Big Sky matchup will be against the Sacramento State Hornets next weekend in Cedar City.

Coming Up Next

The Thunderbirds will travel to Provo on Wednesday April 19th to wrap up a home-and-away series with No. 20 BYU. First pitch at Gail Miller Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
