PROVO, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team traveled to Provo Wednesday night to wrap up a home-and-away series with the No. 19/21 BYU Cougars. Despite a solid performance in the circle from freshman Samantha Guile and stellar defensive play, the Thunderbirds dropped the final game in the series 4-0.

It was a pitcher’s duel the whole way as Guile and BYU’s Arissa Paulson allowed just three hits total through the first five and a half innings of play. The only run during that time came in the bottom of the third when the Cougars took advantage of a wild pitch by Guile to take a 1-0 lead.

The Thunderbird defense backed up Guile’s performance and kept SUU in the game. Third baseman Emilee Sweet made an over-the-railing catch in foul territory to keep the Cougars off the board in the first inning and center fielder Sarah Murphy made a diving play in right center to end the scoring threat in the fifth. Freshman catcher Hannah Williams also threw out the first baserunner of her career, nailing BYU’s Lexi Tarrow at second base for the first out of the game.

A three-run, pinch-hit home run from Madison Merrell in the bottom of the sixth inning extended BYU’s lead to 4-0 with just three outs left for the Thunderbirds.

Right fielder Nicole Simonson picked up the only hit in the game for the Thunderbirds as she  doubled to right center field to lead off the seventh inning. Simonson was the only Thunderbird to reach base twice in the game, drawing a walk back in the first inning. The T-Birds were not able to capitalize with Simonson in scoring position and the game came to a close with a 4-0 score in favor of the home team.
