Thunderbird Host Dixie State in Exhibition

Southern Utah SUU will wrap up exhibition play this Wednesday as it hosts Dixie State. The night will feature special Basketball-O-Ween activities followed by a matchup between the Thunderbirds and Red Storm in the Centrum Arena at 7 p.m.
SUU OPENS SEASON WITH 83-62 WIN OVER NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS
Southern Utah opened its season with a 83-62 win over New Mexico Highlands on Monday night. The Thunderbirds scored 26 points off 26 NMHU turnovers and shot 48 percent from the floor to come out on top. Sophomore guard Marquelle Funk led SUU with 18 points while connecting on 4-of-5 shots from behind the arc.

ABOUT THE DIXIE STATE RED STORM
Dixie State posted an overall record of 18-8 last year, along with a 9-3 mark in the Division II PacWest Conference. Senior center Becca Thomas is the top returning scorer and rebounder for the Red Storm after recording averages of 11.8 ppg and 5.7 rbg last season. Head coach Angela Kristensen is in her seventh season at Dixie State where she has compiled a record of 108-53. SUU took a 76-66 exhibition win over the Red Storm last year in Cedar City and holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series.
THUNDERBIRDS PICKED TO FINISH ELEVENTH IN PRESEASON POLL
The Southern Utah University women’s basketball team has been picked to finish eleventh in its first season a member of the Big Sky Conference. Defending champion Idaho State received eight first place votes to come out on top of the coaches polls followed by Northern Colorado and the University of Montana. Northern Arizona and Weber State were slotted ninth and tenth respectively, just ahead of SUU.
MANDELKO SELECTED TO SUMMIT LEAGUE ALL-NEWCOMER TEAM
Southern Utah’s Hailey Mandelko was named to the Summit League all-newcomer team following an outstanding freshman campaign in her former league. The SUU point guard led the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game on the year while her 14.0-point average in conference play ranked eighth in the Summit League. The Lexington, Nebraska native was also one of the top outside-shooters in the league, connecting on 20 of her 48 attempts for the second-highest three-point percentage at 41%. Mandelko started in each of the first 19 games of the year for SUU before suffering a season-ending injury. Over that stretch she lead the team in scoring nine times, including posting a career-high 23 points in a win over Utah Valley.
T-BIRDS ADD TO COACHING STAFF
Southern Utah University has announced the hiring of new assistant coach Jill Mahoney who will join the Thunderbird women’s basketball program for the upcoming season. Mahoney comes to SUU from Western State College of Colorado where she helped the Mountaineers to a top four finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. As a player she helped Grand Canyon to an undefeated PacWest season and received all-conference honors in her senior season.
