CEDAR CITY, Utah, Nov. 28 – The Southern Utah University women’s basketball team has received its first commitment of the 2013 recruiting class as Madison Wright of Spokane, Wash. has signed an NLI and will join the Thunderbirds next fall.

“We have been recruiting Madi for several years now and were absolutely thrilled when she committed to play here at SUU,” commented SUU head coach JR Payne. “A 5’10 point guard is something that is extremely rare and we will ask her to play an important role in our back court over the next four years. Madi has a true ‘scorer’s mentality’ from the perimeter as she can shoot the 3, can attack and has a great pull up jumper.”

The 5’10” point guard enters her senior season at Gonzaga Prep High School, where she will look to lead the Bullpups back to the state tournament for a third-straight season. Wright was named to 4A all-state tournament team last year after averaging 11.8 points a game in the playoffs to go follow up her season average of 9.7 ppg. She also dished out 36 assists as a junior and shot over 35 percent from the three-point line.

“Madison has grown tremendously as a basketball player and young lady here at Gonzaga Prep,” said Wright’s high school coach Mike Arte. “She has an outstanding skill set for today’s game with her length and athleticism. She is going to be a tremendous college athlete and basketball player because of the versatility she can bring to any team.”

Wright has also had a successful run on the AAU circuit in the Greater Spokane area while competing with former Gonzaga University guard Winston Brooks’ club, the Northwest Blazers.
