CEDAR CITY, Utah, Dec. 2 – The Southern Utah University women’s basketball team has received its second commitment of its 2013 recruiting class, signing Alaskan native Mary Klapperich to a National Letter of Intent.

“Mary is one of the most well-rounded and hardest working players that we have ever had the opportunity to recruit,” commented SUU head coach JR Payne. “Her work ethic and determination will be a tremendous asset to our program from the minute she steps on campus next fall. We believe that Mary’s versatility and skill set will give her the opportunity to have an immediate impact on our perimeter play next season.”

The 6’1” guard has received all-state honors in each of the past two years, and was a final candidate for the ESPN Gatorade State Girls Basketball Player of the Year following her junior season. Klapperich helped Colony High School to the Alaskan state semifinals and an overall third place finish in 2012.

“Mary likes to be pushed and has very high expectations for herself and those around her,” said Klapperich’s high school coach Jeff Bowker. “She has terrific defensive fundamentals and will provide a lot of intensity to that side of the ball. Offensively she can shoot, she can pass, and she handles the ball. It should also be noted that as good of a player as she is, Mary is equally a quality person and student who will succeed in her pursuits.”

Klapperich has also had a great run on the AAU circuit in the Great Northwest, competing with Team Alaska under the direction of head coach Don Witzel.

The future looks bright for the Thunderbird backcourt as Klapperich joins Madison Wright from Spokane, Wash. who has also committed to play at SUU next fall.

“We couldn’t be more excited about signing Mary and Madi in this year’s recruiting class,” stated Payne. “We believe that they have the potential to be two of the most talented guards we have ever signed.”
