CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University gymnastics hosted its annual Red/White Scrimmage on Friday night with the White team taking the victory 134.075-132.475 behind three individual titles. The teams only competed with four gymnasts on vault and bars and three gymnasts on beam and floor, accounting for the lower scores.
The Red squad opened the night with its first and only individual title as freshman Baylie Divino scored a 9.725 on vault.
Fellow freshman, Arlyn Amor, captured the first title for White also during the first rotation with a 9.750 on the uneven bars. Amor narrowly edged out senior Alyssa Click (9.725) and sophomore Jamie Armijo (9.700), competing for Red.
The underclassmen success over the first two rotations gave way to upperclassmen success in the third and fourth with seniors Caitlin Kennedy and Michaela Chernoch taking titles on beam and floor, respectively. Kennedy led White on beam with a 9.775 with Chernoch leading White on floor with a 9.800, the highest individual score of the night.
Floor proved to be the strongest event for both squads during the night as four of the six routines on the event were scored a 9.700 or higher.
"We did a lot of good things tonight and I think it really gave our team an extra bit of confidence," head coach Scott Bauman said after the meet.
Southern Utah will officially open the 2013 season on January 6 at UCLA with the home opener slated for February 1 against Utah State.
