CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University and the Thunderbird Club will celebrate women’s athletics by hosting a special Ladies Luncheon and silent auction on Friday, Feb. 15. The event will feature special guest speaker Norma Carr, current athletic director at Salt Lake Community College, and recognize former SUU athletic administrator Dr. Kathryn Berg and long time Thunderbird supporter Lois Stawitcke. The luncheon will be held on Feb. 15, at Noon in the Sharwan Smith Center Ballroom on the SUU campus.

Norma Carr is one of the most recognizable individuals in Utah sports history and regarded as one of the top 25 most influential people in Utah sports. She has been at the helm of the Bruin athletic program for over 20 years and is a member of the Utah Softball Hall of Fame, the Utah Coaches of Merit Hall of Fame and the UHSAA Officials Hall of Fame.

Lois Stawitcke has been an avid fan of Thunderbird athletics for over 23 years and is a member of the Thunderbird Club. She spends her time traveling with the teams, attending practices and can be found at almost every game. Stawitcke is a recognizable face in the stands, where she is seen smiling, cheering and yelling for the SUU student-athletes. Her terrific enthusiasm and support for the athletic programs at the university make her the ideal inaugural recipient for the Thunderbird Enthusiast Award.

Dr. Berg dedicated her life to Southern Utah University Athletics in Cedar City and will be the first recipient of the Thunderbird Legacy Award at the event. A champion of women's athletics from 1968 until her retirement in 2001, her contributions to SUU athletics are countless. She established SUU women's athletic programs and coached every woman's sport before moving on to dedicate her time as Associate Director of Athletics. Dr. Berg is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame as well as the University's Athletic Hall of Fame. On May 6, 2005 the softball facility on Southern Utah’s campus was dedicated and renamed as the Kathryn Berg Softball Field in her honor.

The price of admission for the event will include tickets to an SUU gymnastics meet and women’s basketball game. For more information, or to reserve a table or tickets, interested parties should contact the Thunderbird Club office at 435-865-8385 or via email at
