T-Birds' Season Bests Continue to Improve Despite Loss to Denver

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Feb. 8 - Southern Utah gymnastics continued to build on team and personal bests as the T-Birds hosted Denver University on Friday night. Despite falls on the bars, vault and floor, Denver tallied a winning score of 196.400 over the Flippin' Birds season-best score of 195.475.

"I am really proud of how the ladies did tonight," head coach Scott Bauman said. "We put a lot of pressure on Denver and posted some great season and personal bests."

Denver led through the first rotation with a 49.150 total on bars to the T-Birds' 48.580 on vault. Rochelle Bernier set the pace for the T-Birds with a score of 9.825 while Jamie Armijo and Caitlin Kennedy each posted season-bests with respective scores of 9.800 and 9.775. Brittney Jensen also posted a 9.775 while Baylie Divino rounded out the team score with a 9.675.

Armijo and Arlyn Amor each tied their personal bests on bars, posting scores of 9.800 and 9.775 respectively and leading Southern Utah in the second rotation. Bernier and Michaela Chernoch also posted scores of 9.775 on the bars while Ana Jaworski scored a 9.675. Denver defeated the T-Birds in the second rotation with a team score of 49.150 to Southern Utah's 48.800, bringing the totals to 98.275 and 97.650 respectively.

Freshman Natalie Trejo led the gymnasts in the third rotation with a 9.800 on the balance beam, followed by Chernoch (9.750) and Bernier (9.725). Jaworski and Kennedy rounded out the team score tallying respective marks of 9.700 and 9.675. The T-Birds posted a team score of 48.650 in the third rotation, falling in the rotation to the Pioneers' total 49.025.

Southern Utah posted the first victory of the evening in the fourth rotation, tallying a season-best team score of 49.175 while the Pioneers posted a 49.100. Chernoch captured the title for the floor exercise as she tied her season-best score of 9.875, while Jaworski, Jensen, Kennedy and Armijo each scored 9.825. Armijo's score improved her career record for the event and brought her all-around to 38.750, another career record. Jaworski and Kennedy also set new personal bests with their marks on the floor, while Bernier tied her season best.

Denver's Moriah Martin captured the title in the all-around with a combined score of 39.375, followed by Chernoch (38.975), Armijo (38.750) and Kennedy (38.275).

The Flippin' Birds will spend another week at home as the team prepares to host Sacramento State in another Western Athletic Conference face-off next Friday. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. in the Centrum Arena and a live video feed, along with live stats, is anticipated to be available at
