T-Bird Golfers Finish Ninth At Desert

PALM DESERT, Calif., Feb. 24 - Sammy Cole shot 1-under par 71 to lead Southern Utah to its best round of Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Thunderbirds combined to shoot 296, one shot better than Saturday's round, and finished in ninth place at 38-over par 902, five shots better than 10th-place Arkansas-Little Rock.
Cole finished at 4-over par 220 in three rounds over the par 72, 7,061-yard Classic Club course to place 22nd. SUU's Jake Holt shot his second consecutive 73 on Sunday to finish at 11-over par 227 and in 48th place, tied with teammate Tim Leonard, who shot 76 on Sunday. John Reid shot 76 as well on Sunday to finish at 236 and in 79th place, while Taylor Schone had a final-round 80 to finish at 232 and in 62nd place. SUU's Brady Welburn, who was competing as an individual, shot his best round of the tournament on Sunday, 76, to finish tied for 95th.
After struggling to an opening-round 309 on Friday the Thunderbirds battled back with a 297 on Saturday and Sunday's 296 to move up seven spots in the last two days, from a tie for 16th place following Friday's play at the 17-team tournament. The team was 12th heading into Sunday's round.
Sixteenth-ranked TCU ran away with the team title. The Horned Frogs were the only team to play all three rounds at par or better and finished with a score of 8-under par 280 for a final 845. St. Mary's finished second at 870, with San Francisco and Texas Tech tied in third at 874. Oregon State (875) finished fifth, followed by Iowa State (888), Cal Poly (893), Nebraska (895) and SUU.
Arkansas State finished 10th at 907, followed by Idaho (909), Kansas (910), Santa Clara (916) and host Wyoming (918), with George Mason and Louisiana-Monroe tied for 15th at 936. Wichita State did not post a final score as two Shocker players withdrew from the tournament.
TCU's Julien Brun was the leader wire-to-wire. Brun finished at 10-under par 206, five shots better than teammate Eli Cole, who finished second, while Texas Tech's Finley Ewing was third at 213.
