RIVERSIDE, Calif., Mar. 10 – Southern Utah (4-14) squared off against IUPUI (8-9) for the second time in two days at the Mizuno Invitational on Sunday. The Thunderbirds was unable to match the previous day’s outcome however and fell to the Jaguars by a final score of 5-1.
The game remained close throughout most of the afternoon as SUU fell behind early after IUPUI collected on an RBI single from Lindsey Richards in the first inning but got the run back in the bottom of the third as Kadi Henderson reached home on an error.
The score was still tied at 1-1 in the top of the fifth when a ground out RBI from freshman Ali Mosier put the Jags back in front. IUPUI then tacked on three more runs in the final frame on a pair of hits and SUU errors before holding off the T-Birds for the 5-1 victory.
Freshman Cassie Vodde (4-1) posted a solid outing for the Jaguars, throwing a complete game while giving up just one unearned run. She also struck out three batters and surrendered just six hits and a single walk. Ariel Zimmerman (3-7) took the loss for Southern Utah after allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits over seven innings. She also recorded five strikeouts and a walk.
Mikkel Griffin and Meagan Neilson each had a pair of hits for SUU, with Henderson representing the lone run for the team. Morgan Schlobohm finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored for IUPUI.
The Thunderbirds wrap up their tournament appearance tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader against host UC Riverside beginning at 2:30 p.m. (MT) Southern Utah will then make a quick trip to San Diego for a series of games starting with a matchup vs. Fairfield University on Tuesday.
