CEDAR CITY, Utah, April 26 – Thirty-one Southern Utah University student-athletes earned 2012-13 Winter All-Academic Team honors from the Big Sky Conference, the league office announced today.
Included in the group are 13 members of the Thunderbird women’s indoor track & field team, nine members of the men’s indoor track & field team, five members of the men’s basketball team and four members of the women’s basketball team.
Earning recognition from the women’s indoor track & field team were Sylvia Bedford, a graduate student majoring in sports conditioning & performance; Kirsten Bradford, a senior elementary education major; Aubrey Bryson, a junior majoring in human nutrition; Kaylee Coates, a graduate student in professional communication; Whitney Curtis, a senior nursing student; and Taylir Garrison and Haley Harris, a pair of freshman elementary education majors.
The women’s indoor list also included Jasmyn Hildebrandt, a sophomore human nutrition major; Kayla Kovar, a senior majoring in physical education and human performance, Shelli Mogensen, a senior majoring in chemistry; Jamie Smith, a senior majoring in chemistry education; Cheyenne Thatcher, a senior agricultural science and industry major; and senior elementary education major Dayna VanArsdol.
Earning honors from the men’s indoor track & field team were Jeff Alley, a senior physical education and human performance major; Devan Antczak, a senior psychology major; Ryan Barrus, a senior finance major; Josh Gardner, a sophomore majoring in accounting; and John Hart, a senior majoring in accounting.
Jayson Kovar, a freshman integrated engineering major; Kodai Kusano, a senior psychology major; Jon Lee, a senior accounting major; and Dallin Tavoian, a senior majoring in athletic training, also earned honors from the men’s indoor squad.
Men’s basketball players earning recognition included freshman A.J. Hess, who is undecided upon a major; junior Jaren Jeffery, a physical education major; Jordan Johnson, a senior majoring in exercise science; Chris Nsenki, a sophomore finance major; and Drake Thomas, a freshman majoring in psychology.
Earning academic honors from the women’s basketball team were freshman allied health major Marquelle Funk; sophomore psychology major Desiree Jackson; sophomore physical education and human performance major Hailey Mandelko; and Lori Parkinson, a freshman who is undecided upon her major course of study.
To be included on the team student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions and have completed at least one academic term at their current Big Sky institution.
