The Thunderbirds were in fourth place at 8-over par 296, 14 shots behind Houston Baptist heading into Tuesday’s round, but combined to shoot 3-under par 285 on Tuesday to overtake the Huskies, who followed Monday’s 282 with a round of 300 on Tuesday.
With a two-round total of 5-over par 581 the Thunderbirds hold a one-shot lead over HBU heading into Wednesday’s final round.
In addition to Schone’s round of 69 three Thunderbirds shot even par over the par 72, 6,936-yard Dominion Country Club course to give SUU the lead.
Schone birdied three holes without a bogey on the front nine then offset three back-nine bogies with three more birdies to move up from a tie for 16th place and into a tie for fourth at 1-under par 143. Tim Leonard and Jake Holt were second among Thunderbirds in ninth place at 1-over 145, while Sammy Cole was 28th at 149 and John Reid was 28th at 151.
Leonard, Cole and Reid all shot even par on Tuesday while Holt shot 73 after a team-low round of 72 on Monday.
Schone, whose 69 was the low round of the day, was two shots behind second-round leader Bryce Edmister of Binghamton – who shot 71 after an opening round 70 to sit at 141 – and one behind Weber State’s Jordan Herzog and Sacramento State’s Jordan Weir. Schone was tied with HBU’s Hudson Hansard in fourth place.
Sacramento State, which had the low team round of the day at 284, was tied with Northern Colorado in third place at 588, seven shots off SUU’s pace, while Utah Valley was another stroke back at 589. Hartford (593) was in sixth place, followed by Binghamton (601), Cal State Bakersfield (605) and Weber State (607). UT Pan American was 10th at 612, with North Dakota 11th (630) and Chicago State (689) in 12th place heading into Wednesday’s final round.
