FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Southern Utah University track & field picked up one more individual title at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday and finished second in four other events to wrap up the competition.
Shaun Murray earned the Thunderbirds' individual title on the day, finishing just ahead of teammate Preston Myers in the men's 100-meters with a personal-best and stadium-record time of 10.47. Myers also recorded a personal-best time of 10.51 as the runner-up. The duo returned in the men's 200-meters, finishing third and second, respectively, with times of 21.41 and 21.34. However, the pair wasn't done there and helped the men's 4x100-meter really team to a third-place finish with a time of 41.31. Murray and Myers finally ended their day competing in their fourth event, the men's 4x400-meter relay, missing team points after a ninth-place time of 3:21.88.
On the women's side in the sprints, Mayra Franco ran a personal-best time and beat the stadium record in the 100-meters, but finished in seventh place with a mark of 12.03.
In the hurdles, Shaye Maurer took home her second runner-up finish of the championships with a second-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.72. Kodai Kusano also found his way onto the medal stand with a third-place finishing time of 14.40 in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
In the middle distances, Jamie Smith won her heat of the women's 1,500-meters (4:34.04), but ended up finishing 10th as the second heat proved to be the faster race. Kirsten Bradford, running in the second heat, recorded the best finish for the T-Birds with a sixth-place time of 4:28.86.
Smith returned in the 5,000-meters later in the day and beat all but one runner in the race, finishing second with a time of 16:35.84. Southern Utah's men also found success in the 5k as Nate Jewkes and Ryan Barrus finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the race with times of 14:35.96 and 14:44.84.
In the field events on the day, Jayson Kovar recorded the best finish on the men's side with a seventh-place mark of 163-1 in the discus with Jennika Wright and Rylee Mulitalo recording team points for the T-Birds in the women's discus. Wright led the way with a third-place mark of 147-10 and was followed by Mulitalo in seventh with a throw of 139-4.
As a team, Southern Utah finished sixth on the men's side totaling 66 points with the women finishing ninth with 49 points. Northern Arizona won the title on the men's side with 143 points with Sacramento State taking the title on the women's side after finishing with 155.5 points.
