CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's volleyball head coach Debby Baker has announced the team's schedule for 2013 with the Thunderbirds set to begin the campaign on Aug. 30 in Mobile, Alabama.
The T-Birds open the season at a tournament hosted by the University of South Alabama and will face Georgia Southern, South Alabama and Tennessee State the final weekend of August. Both Georgia Southern and Tennessee State advanced to the semi-finals of their respective conference tournaments last year with Georgia Southern capturing the Southern Conference's regular season title with an overall league mark of 15-1.
Southern Utah then moves on to Omaha, Neb. for the UNO volleyball classic and will face SIU Edwardsville, Bradley and Nebraska Omaha the first weekend of September. The Thunderbirds then wrap up preseason tournament play with a return trip for head coach Debby Baker to Las Cruces, N. M., her last stop before SUU, and face Northern Illinois, Arkansas Little Rock and New Mexico State, Sept. 13-14.
SUU opens Big Sky Conference play and will host its home opener on Sept. 19 when in-state rival Weber State comes to Cedar City and will follow that match up with Idaho State on Sept. 21. The Thunderbirds will host their third consecutive home match on Sept. 24, welcoming UNLV to the Centrum Arena.
The T-Birds open their Big Sky road slate at Sacramento State and Northern Arizona on Sept. 28 and 30 and then return to Cedar for matches against Eastern Washington and Portland State to begin the month of October.
Those matches will be followed by road games at Montana and Montana State on Oct. 11 and 12 with home games against North Dakota and Northern Colorado on Oct. 17 and 19 wrapping up the first half of Big Sky Conference play.
The Thunderbirds then take their longest regular season road trip of the year with three games at Idaho State, Weber State and Utah Valley near the end of October. Southern Utah will return to Cedar City for a pair of games to conclude October and open November with a Halloween contest with Portland State on Oct. 31 and a match with Northern Arizona on Nov. 4. Fans can anticipate various promotions and activities for the match with Portland State on Halloween.
Southern Utah will close out the 2013 season with four of its final six matches on the road, including contests at Portland State, Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado and North Dakota. The match at North Dakota will mark the end of the regular season for the team after the T-Birds host their home finales against Montana State and Montana on Nov. 14 and 16, respectively.
"This schedule will set up a really tough season for us," head coach Debby Baker said. "Our preseason will be really challenging, but it will help us prepare for the Big Sky when we compete in a league that ranks among the top half in the country."
