CEDAR CITY, Utah, Aug. 2 – Southern Utah’s football team has made progress through the first days of fall camp, but Saturday – the first day the team can don full pads and have full-contact workouts – is the day Thunderbird Coach Ed Lamb has been looking forward to.

“We need to get in full pads.” Lamb says. “We had big question marks coming into camp [regarding] our quarterback and our running back. We had to replace a lot of production at those two positions and there’s no way we can assess our running back until we get into full pads and see who actually breaks tackles.

“There’s certainly a lot of promise,” Lamb adds. “I love the way some of our young backs have come in and hit holes and broken plays down the field. I love the way that our quarterbacks are competing. I’m very positive about going into next week.”

Next week the team will begin a two-week stretch of two-a-day practices, with a 100-minute session each morning and a shorter practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday the team will hold one morning practice session daily.

Saturday’s 100-minute full-pad practice will begin at 8:50 a.m. It will include drills and some scrimmage situations.
