SUU Volleyball Continues 2013 Season in Nebraska this Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball will continue its 2013 campaign this weekend when the team plays a trio of teams in the Omaha Marriott Classic. The T-Birds will face SIU Edwardsville, Bradley on Friday and Nebraska Omaha on Saturday.

SUU will look to bounce back from an 0-3 start last weekend after losses to Georgia Southern, South Alabama and Tennessee State to begin the year. The T-Birds only captured one set during the three matches despite leading late in a few frames.

Southern Utah’s libero, Sariah Pelaez, paced the Thunderbird defense with double-digit digs in all three matches and was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. Kylie Schofield also started her year strong, leading the team in kills in all three matches.

The Thunderbirds will open the weekend against SIU Edwardsville on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and will follow that match with Bradley at 3:00 p.m. SUU will wrap up the tournament Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. against Nebraska Omaha. Scouting SIU Edwardsville

SIU Edwardsville opened the season 0-3 with losses to Indiana State (3-2), Akron (3-0) and Auburn (3-0). The Cougars are hitting .079 as a team while averaging 10.45 kills, 13.18 digs and 1.73 blocks per set.

Individually, Kelsey Augustine leads the team in three categories, including kills (24), services aces (four) and blocks (nine). Kaitlyn O’Reilly and Mallory Mangum have shared the setting duties with 49 and 48 assists, respectively. Chelsea Colclasure leads the team with 51 digs.

This will be the first meeting between SIUE and SUU on the volleyball court.

Scouting Bradley

Bradley has opened the 2013 season with a 2-1 record after posting victories over Western Illinois (3-1) and Maryland Eastern Shore (3-0). The Braves’ lone loss came against Tennessee Martin (3-1). As a team, BU is hitting .238 and averaging 13.55 kills, 17.36 digs and 1.64 blocks per set.

Individually Amy Angelos is leading the team in kills and blocks with 43 and 11, respectively. Lauren Zerante leads the team with 66 digs, with Jessica Teel and Melissa Hoerber sharing the setting duties with 61 and 58 assists, respectively.

This will be the first meeting between BU and SUU on the volleyball court.

Scouting Nebraska-Omaha

Nebraska-Omaha will enter the weekend with an overall mark of 1-2 after a season-opening victory over Houston Baptist (3-1) and losses to UT Pan American (3-0) and Louisiana Lafayette (3-0). The Mavs are hitting .166 as a team and averaging 11.3 kills, 16.4 digs and 2.5 blocks per set.

Individually, UNO is led offensively by Kelley Wollak with 32 kills on a team-high 101 attempts and is led defensively by Kimberly Bailey with 47 digs. Megan Schmale leads the team with 12 blocks on the year with Michaela Schimmer and Bailey Baxter sharing setting duties with 50 and 44 assists, respectively.

This will be the first meeting between UNO and SUU on the volleyball court.
