OMAHA, Neb. - Southern Utah University volleyball picked up its first win of the season on Saturday morning in a five-set victory over Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2. The win snapped a slow start to the 2013 season for the T-Birds and moved the team's record to 1-5 on the year.

SUU got off to a sluggish start in the first set, falling behind by as much as 11 (20-9) capping a 9-1 run by the Mavericks. The Thunderbirds matched UNO in points down the stretch, 5-5, and staved off a pair of set points at 24-12 and 24-13 on back-to-back kills by Kylie Schofield. However, Omaha eventually finished the set with a kill to take a 1-0 lead with the 25-14 victory.

Southern Utah, once again, encountered a slow start in the second set, falling behind 5-1 in the early goings of the frame. The T-Birds came back to tie the set at 11-11 and later took the lead 13-11 after a six-point SUU run turned the tide of the match. SUU had its first set point at 24-20, but a pair of Thunderbird miscues cut the margin to two at 24-22. Southern Utah benefitted from a Maverick error on the following play to take the set, 25-22, and square the match 1-1.

The momentum went back to the home side in the third set as UNO led start-to-finish despite Thunderbird efforts that tied the match three times at 4-4, 10-10 and 14-14. The Mavs used a three-point push at the final deadlock to take a 17-14 lead and closed out the match with back-to-back kills to go up 2-1 with the 25-19 victory.

Southern Utah countered with a quick start in the fourth set, scoring the first three points and later building a 7-1 lead on kills by Annie Stradling and Alissa Youart and five UNO errors. The Mavericks were only able to get to as close as two throughout the set as the T-Birds absorbed UNO runs and countered with runs of their own. Kills by Lusia Angilau and Schofield punctuated the set 25-21 for Southern Utah and forced a decisive fifth set with the match tied at 2-2.

The Thunderbirds saved their best for last, hitting a match-high .300 during the fifth set with 11 kills on 30 attempts and only two errors. The performance helped the T-Birds take an early 3-0 lead, fight through three ties and ultimately end the match, 15-11, on a Stradling kill.

Schofield turned in a career-high performance during the match, recording more than one-third of Southern Utah's 61 kills with 22 individual kills, almost doubling her previous season high of 12 against Georgia Southern. Sophomore Jenna Bradfield also tallied career-high numbers with 19 digs, part of Southern Utah's season-best 79 digs during the match. Three more Thunderbirds logged double-digit dig numbers, including Joanna Christenson (14), Youart (12) and Hailey Moore (10). In addition, Christenson also tallied the first double-double of her career with season-high 53 assists.

Southern Utah will be back in action next weekend in a homecoming, of sorts, for head coach Debby Baker when the team travels to Las Cruces, N.M. for a three-team tournament hosted by New Mexico State. NMSU was Baker's last stop before becoming the head coach of SUU with the T-Birds also slated to face Northern Illinois and Arkansas Little Rock. Live stats for each match are anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com.
