BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Southern Utah University suffered a four-set defeat to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night, despite having bested the Roadrunners in a pair of key statistics. The Thunderbirds logged a better hitting percentage (.212 vs .206) and more blocks (18.0 to 8.0) than CSUB, but with the loss dropped to 9-16 on the year.

SUU opened the match trailing Bakersfield throughout most of the early moments of the first set until a three-point Thunderbird run tied the match at 13-13 and led to a CSUB timeout. The break didn't still Southern Utah's momentum as the team ultimately took a 16-13 lead at the end of a six-point push.

Bakersfield answered and tied the game at 17-17 with the teams then battling through ties at 18-18, 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22. The Roadrunners then broke away with three consecutive points to take the set 25-22.

The Thunderbirds bounced back and controlled the second set from the opening serve, beginning the frame with a 5-0 run capped by an Analaine Mailoto kill. Southern Utah never trailed with CSUB only coming as close as three points during the frame. A final kill by Cashaana Renfro wrapped up the set for the T-Birds, 25-16, as SUU hit a team-best .407 with 12 kills on 27 attempts with only one error.

Southern Utah continued to control the match during most of the third set, holding an advantage over Bakersfield until a four-point run by the Roadrunners tied the match at 16-16. The lead then changed hands four times down the stretch with CSUB taking leads at 17-16 and 23-22 and the T-Birds claiming the advantage at 20-19 and capturing a set point at 24-23. However, the victory slipped away from the Thunderbirds as three consecutive errors, one serving and two attacking, gave the set to Bakersfield, 26-24.

The loss seemed to take away the Thunderbirds' momentum going in the fourth set and rejuvenated the home side as CSUB hit a match-high .500 with 17 kills on 26 swings with only four errors to take the match 25-16.

Mailoto led all attackers with 23 kills and added five digs and three blocks. Cashaana Renfro led all players at the net with 10 blocks, including one solo block and nine blocking assists. Bakersfield was paced by a trio of double-digit attackers with Debora Araujo leading the way with 19 kills and Kelsee Sawyer (15 kills) and Molly O'Hagan (11 kills) following.

Southern Utah will look to return to its winning ways on Monday night as the team wraps up a six-day road trip and faces Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. The match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. (MT) with live stat and live video links available online at
