CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University volleyball suffered a three-set defeat to Eastern Washington on Saturday night, falling to 9-19 on the year and 5-11 in Big Sky Conference play. The Eagles moved to 4-24 overall and 4-13 in conference play, continuing a two-game winning streak.

"We just didn't come out with any fire tonight," head coach Debby Baker said after the match. "We did better in that third set, but Eastern came back and was able to use that momentum to close the match out."

Southern Utah had a set point at 24-21 in the final frame, leading since the 13-12 mark.  However, three consecutive points by Eastern Washington tied the set at 24-24 and extended the set into extra points. SUU then broke the tie with a Taylor Heine, Analaine Mailoto block only to have EWU come back and tie the match again at 25-25. The same scenario played out again as a Mailoto kill gave the T-Birds the 26-25 lead, but an Eagle kill tied the match again at 26-26.

The scene then swapped with Eastern Washington taking the lead at 27-26 on a service ace, but Southern Utah answered with a Mikayla Dunford kill to tie the match for the final time at 27-27. It was then that back-to-back kills for Eastern wrapped up the match for the away team, 29-27.

The night began favorably for Southern Utah in the first set with the Thunderbirds taking an early 4-1 lead behind kills by Mailoto and Dunford. However, a six-point run by the Eagles reversed fortunes and gave Eastern Washington a lead that was never again lost. EWU finished out the set 25-16.

The Eagles used a similar seven-point run early in the second set to erase a 2-0 Southern Utah lead and build a 7-2 advantage of their own. SUU trimmed the margin to a single point at 9-8, forcing an Eastern Washington timeout. The break was effective as EWU came out with three straight points and finished the set on a 16-4 run to take the frame 25-12.

Mailoto led Southern Utah with 12 kills on the night with Hailey Moore leading the team with 11 digs. Eastern Washington was led by Cora Kellerman with 15 kills with the senior hitting .412 (15-1-34) on the night.

Southern Utah will take its final road trip of the season next week, playing at Montana State and Montana on Friday and Saturday. Live stat and live video links are anticipated to be available online at
