LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Southern Utah University gymnastics logged its highest season-opening mark in school history with a 194.875 at UCLA on Sunday afternoon, but fell to the No. 2-ranked Bruins with the home side scoring a 196.150.

"We came into this meet wanting to hit and did just that for the first 23 routines," head coach Scott Bauman said. "We scored really well and to do that on the road against a team that is anticipated to contend for the national title shows just how good our team can be. The girls handled all of that pressure remarkably well and did a great job today."

SUU opened the meet on the uneven bars and finished the rotation within a half a tenth of UCLA which began on vault, 48.850 to 48.800. Senior Alyssa Click led the way with a 9.850 on the event and was followed by a pair of 9.775's from Rochelle Bernier and Michaela Chernoch. Jamie Armijo (9.725) and Arlyn Amor (9.675) rounded out the team scores for the Thunderbirds on the event.

Southern Utah then moved to vault, scoring a 48.600 as the Bruins tallied a 49.300 on the uneven bars. The T-Birds' team score was made up of four marks above a 9.700, including a career-best 9.775 from Chernoch. She was followed by Bernier with a 9.750 and Armijo and Amor with matching 9.700's. A final 9.675 from Caitlin Kennedy rounded out the team score.

UCLA's Olivia Courtney (9.875) and Lichelle Wong/Stephanie DeJesus (9.900) ended up with the individual titles on vault and bars, respectively.

SUU outscored UCLA for the first time during the meet during the third rotation, logging a 48.600 on the floor exercise as the Bruins tallied a 48.525 on beam. Amor, competing in her first collegiate meet, led the T-Birds with a 9.800 and was followed by another true freshman, Natalie Trejo, with a 9.750. The duo was followed by Armijo and Chernoch with a 9.725 and 9.700, respectively. A 9.625 from Ana Jaworski wrapped up the team score for the Thunderbirds.

Southern Utah picked up its first individual title of the meet during the final rotation as Click finished with a 9.875 on the balance beam. Fellow senior, Caitlin Kennedy, was just behind in third place with a 9.800 on the same apparatus. A 9.775 from Chernoch, 9.750 from Trejo and 9.675 from Jaworski rounded out the Thunderbirds' team score of 48.875. UCLA finished off its meet with a 49.475 on the floor exercise to wrap up its victory.

Chernoch, one of two T-Birds in the all-around, narrowly missed a career high by .025, finishing second with a 39.025. Armijo finished with a 38.325, having suffered a fall on the balance beam.

Southern Utah will be back in action on January 19, facing the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The meet will also feature Oregon State and West Virginia in what will be the second of three road meets for the Thunderbirds to begin the 2013 season. The meet at Utah is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. with live stats anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com.
