CEDAR CITY, Utah - Jan. 15 - Southern Utah thrower Kayla Kovar earned her first Big Sky Athlete of the Week award after qualifying for the conference championship in both the shot put and weight throw at NAU's Lumberjack Team Challenge.

Kovar opened the indoor track & field season with a third-place finish in the weight throw at NAU, recording a mark of 57-0.75. The junior went on to place fifth in the shot put with a mark of 48-6. As the Big Sky conference requires athletes to meet specified qualifying standards in order to compete at the conference championship, Kovar guaranteed her place among the field as she exceeded the standard marks of 13.40m (43-11.75) in the shot put and 16.40m (53-9.75) in the weight throw.

The Thunderbird teams will split between competition at New Mexico and Northern Arizona this weekend, with Kovar on the squad traveling to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Lobo's Cherry & Silver Invitational on Jan 18-19.
