ST. GEORGE, Utah, Feb. 11 - College of Charleston shot 2-under par 286 to take a six shot lead over second place Seattle University on the first day of the 14-team Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational. Host Southern Utah was in eighth place at 303 at the tournament being held at the par 72, 6,879-yard Sunbroook Golf Club, utilizing the Pointe and Woodbridge nines.
Charleston's Alex Ellis was in a four-way tie for the lead with Utah State's Tanner Higham, Brigham Young's Stephen Archibald and Cal Poly's Camden Price at 2-under par 70.
Southern Utah was led by Tim Leonard and Sammy Cole, at 2-over par 74 in 19th place. Connor Van Gilder was 36th at 76, with Jake Holt and Taylor Schone tied in 67th at 79. SUU's John Reid and Brady Wellburn, playing as individuals, were in 60th at 78 and 72nd at 80, respectively.
Cal Poly was in third place at 294, followed by Denver and USU at 298, Utah Valley at 299 and Idaho at 301. Northern Colorado, Weber State and Dixie State were tied in ninth at 306, three shots behind the Thunderbirds, while Boise State and Cal State Bakersfield were tied in 12th at 309 and Oral Roberts was 14th at 311.
The final round tees off Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
