Menís Tennis Opens Era in Montana this Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University men’s tennis will kick-off its 2013 season this weekend, marking the beginning of the newest sport on campus. The Thunderbirds will open Big Sky Conference play with matches at Montana on Saturday and at Montana State on Sunday.

SUU enters the season with a roster comprised entirely of walk-ons, including three freshmen. Spencer Nielsen and Alex Dial are the only members of the squad with any experience past high school as each played at Southern Virginia University (NAIA) and Salt Lake Community College, respectively.

Southern Utah will join another first-year program, North Dakota, in opening the season this weekend with UND slated to face Drake University in Des Moines on Saturday.

The matches for SUU in Missoula and Bozeman are scheduled to begin at 11:00 and 10:00 a.m., respectively.

Scouting Montana

The University of Montana was picked second in the preseason coaches poll, but has yet to win a match (0-3) with losses against Boise State, Air Force and the University of Utah.

Scouting Montana State

Montana State was picked seventh in the preseason coaches poll, but are currently first in the Big Sky with a 2-0 mark with wins over Northern Colorado and Portland State. The Bobcats are 3-4 overall on the year with their other win coming against Seattle.

Southern Utah’s roster is made up entirely of athletes from the state of Utah.
